• “Horace McElroy, son of George W. and Adelaide (Atkinson) McElroy, was born at Lancaster, Pa., October 2, 1849. He attended the common schools of Meadville, Pa., until he was fourteen years old, and then entered the United States navy, and served for the next seven years on board the sailing sloops of war "Macedonian," "Savannah" and "Dale," cruising the while along the Atlantic coast.”
