1856
A Janesville gas stock company was formed early in the year; the Janesville Gas Company was chartered by the legislature, completed its plant and commenced the manufacture of gas.
The evidence
“The Gas Works. — Prior to 1856, the people of Janesville were without gas, and dependent upon the tallow candle or oil lamps (rude contrivances those days) for light. In the early part of that year, a stock company was formed, composed of the leading citizens, for the purpose of erecting and operating gas works.”
