Dr. John M. Evans settled at "The Grove" (later Evansville) and began practice.

The evidence

• “Dr. Evans was the first physician at "The Grove," as the one frame house, one double log cabin and log school house was called when he settled there in April, 1846. When a postoffice was established there in 1849 it was called "Evansville" in his honor.”
