The picture

A close view of a self-propelled rail car with a rounded, knife-like front end, a row of round porthole windows along its side, roof ventilators, and a slatted cowcatcher (pilot) at the front; the number 711 is painted on the front end. A woman in a dark coat and hat stands at far left, a wooden post in the foreground, and a clapboard building with a sign at right.

Uncertain readings:

  • front, lettering on the car's side: […]Y[?] COMPANY (or […]N COMPANY) — the lettering is faint, the left part almost gone
  • front, building sign: […]MORE / […]D MILL (or […]MORE / FEED MILL) — the left edge of the sign is cut off by the car body
  • front, printing: real photo (or modern reprint (photographic copy)) — a photographic print with white hand-lettered caption, but the back is bright white and unmarked by age, which may mean a later print from an old negative

Reader's note: Unused. Not a Beloit or Rock River scene: the caption places it at Sycamore, Illinois. The porthole windows and pointed front are the look of an early gasoline motor car rather than an electric interurban (no trolley pole is visible), though the caption calls it an interurban car. The back's clean white stock and plain 'CORRESPONDENCE HERE / NAME AND ADDRESS HERE' layout show no aging, which is worth checking before treating the card as period.
