He was very successful in his business, making many acquaintances and business friends among Chicago's solid business people of that time. In the spring of 1871 Mr. Pixley bought a peach farm in St. Joseph, Mich., thinking to retire here and devote most of his time to outdoor pursuits, but in October, 1871, occurred the great fire in Chicago, in which Mr. Pixley lost all his possessions except the Michigan home, compelling him again to take up business.
