In the spring of 1880 he was appointed third assistant physician at the State Hospital for the Insane, at Madison, Wis.; a year later became second assistant, and, in another year, was made first assistant. July 1, 1884, though one of the youngest men in the United States to hold such a position, he was unanimously chosen by the state board of supervision for superintendent of that state hospital. He was the first western superintendent to adopt the non-restraint system.
