Williams, in 1861, responded and enlisted in Company H, Second Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and with the Iron brigade, was assigned to the Army of the Potomac. He saw much service, being with his regiment engaged in the battles of Bull Run, Gainsville, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, loosing his right leg in that battle, July 1, 1863. He served until November 26, 1863, when he received an honorable discharge and was mustered out of the service.
