During these five years Janesville seemed to suffer an epidemic of fires, large tracts of the old buildings and many of the better ones being destroyed. In November, 1865, the Eoethinger brewery, at the foot of South Main street, was destroyed, and on December 12 the greater portion of the block on North Main street from Milwaukee to North First street was destroyed. The hand fire engines were of no avail and brands from the burning block on Main street were carried a considerable distance, destroying several remote residences and bams.
